Ukraine has a long maritime tradition, and some of the largest shipping companies in the world have their home ports in Ukraine.
Danica’s main office is in Odessa, which is the key maritime hub in Ukraine.
Today, Ukraine has the largest community of seafarers in Europe, is the fifth largest seafaring nation in the world, and is the third largest provider of officers to the world fleet. There are some 80,000 deep-sea seafarers in the country, including 36,000 officers with international experience.
Traditionally, seafarers from Ukraine had experience on dry-cargo vessels, but in the last few decades the country has developed a strong pool of tanker officers. In the last few years, a competent pool of officers with experience in offshore and construction vessels has been steadily growing.
Ukraine has continuously upgraded and modernized its maritime education centers, offering the highest international standards.
With employment conditions at sea still attractive when compared to the shore-based conditions in Ukraine, the country will be able to maintain its large pool of seafarers in the future. Maritime universities have no difficulty in attracting students with great potential, and every year as many as 2,000 highly competent officers graduate from these institutions.
