Since the countries regained their independency in the 1990ties the governments have made large investments in maritime education and the seafarers have continuously enhanced their competences. Today the Baltic countries offers and beside officers and ratings for dry cargo and reefer vessels the countries also offer highly qualified officers for specialised tonnage like chemical, product and gas tankers as well as a vast pool of offshore officers. Klaipeda is an old city and dates back to the year 1252 where the city is first mentioned. The Port of Klaipeda is today the major port in the Baltic countries and is very busy and constantly growing. It is a large ferry and ro/ro port as it also serves as the main hub for import and export, not only to and from Lithuania but also Belarus and Russia.
